We at Kaye Lites have just gotten our
hands on the new Joker Bug 400 and 800 kits, and we're impressed. The new
Joker Bug is a redesigned product in the K 5600 line whose utmost feature is
efficiency. Right out of the case, we were excited by the tight design in both head and
ballast. In two minutes the head was on a baby
stand, ready to test in half the space of similar candlelight fixtures, giving us some indication of the ease of use on set.
Accessories include a full lens set, four-way barn doors, and a frosted beaker
to diffuse the light at the source.

K5600 claims that the new
Joker Bug 800 is as bright as some 1.2k HMI's, so we decided to put the
Joker to a quick test. The 800 Bug inside a Video Pro Medium Lightbank was
brighter than a LTM 1.2k par with its Medium Quartz Lightbank. Direct with
a super-wide par lens on both the Joker 800
and an Arri 1.2+ par at
20 feet, the 800w was just two thirds of a stop less. Only drawing 800 Watts the Joker
par virtually matched the 1.2k
despite being a third the size.

The versatility of the Bug really shines with the use of a Chimera light bank.
The Joker Bug gets its name from the unique "bug-light" design which
allows the bare lamp to protrude into the Chimera fixture, spreading the light
so nicely that smaller Chimeras can be used while still softly distributing the
light. The convenience and output of the Joker Bug in a Chimera is unrivaled.
